ABSTRACT
In dam bar cutting process which is necessary for removing dam bar after resin enclosure, the wear condition of a machine tool gives us an important information on the life of the tool. This paper proposes a new method for estimating the wear state from observation of cutting dust (1st) and lead (2nd) by use of image and signal processing technique. The 1st method estimates the wear condition of a machine tool from the width of the tool fringes stamped on the surface of cutting dust. The method for determining the width of the fringes uses signal processing technique, such as Laplacian and cross correlation. It is shown that the width of fringes range becomes small as wear of a tool progresses. The 2nd method estimates the wear condition of a machine tool from the height of the crack generated on the lead after dam bar cutting. It is shown that the height becomes small as the wear of the tool progresses. Thus, the wear condition of a tool can be estimated through the observation of dam bar cutting dust and the remaining lead.
