ABSTRACT
This paper deals with a new wheel for controlling an attitude of an artificial satellite. Although rigid wheels are usually utilized to control the attitude, rotating the rigid wheels occurs scattering metal powder and lubricating oil. Therefore, it damages devices in the satellite and deteriorate a space environment. In this paper, we propose a disk type permanent magnet soaked in magnetic fluid. (Hereafter, this wheel is called "Magnetic Fluid Wheel".) Since the magnetic fluid takes on magnetism, it's drawn to a magnetic field. As a result, the viscosity of magnetic fluid increases in a magnetic field. Then magnetic fluid changes the shape like rubber around a disk type permanent magnet. Using this special characteristic, the proposed new wheel can solve the problem mentioned above. We built an experimental apparatus to verify the characteristics of the Magnetic Fluid Wheel. The experimental apparatus is composed of a Magnetic Fluid Wheel, a plane base, a compressor, a CCD camera and a personal computer. The plane base with a Magnetic Fluid Wheel rises to the surface by compressed air from a compressor. Thus, the artificial satellite can be simulated in a 2-dimensional plane. The motion of this air bearing plane base is imported images in a personal computer through a CCD camera. Then the rotating angle is calculated after the image processing.
