ABSTRACT
Tethered satellite systems have been proposed for many important space applications such as cargo transfer, space construction, energy transmission, rendezvous procedure, and low-altitude science applications. One of the primary issues in tether utilization is fast deployment/retrieval of attached payloads. This paper studies the control problems of deployment and retrieval of a tethered satellite system. The rho-th order approximate linearization is applied to the control problem and a nonlinear controller for the system is designed. Results of numerical simulation show that the control performance of the proposed nonlinear controller is better than that of linear controller without nonlinear compensation.
